Homecoming 2017 promises special times for alumni who want to check in on their alma mater and reconnect with their friends.
Alumni fun starts with a reunion social and street fair on Friday evening, Feb. 24.
Activities get underway at 5:30 p.m. in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Center with Caribbean appetizers to match the pirate vibe in the weekend’s theme: It’s a Lion’s Life for Me. Beverage service will be available.
During the social, winners of the Diligence to Victory and Young Alumni Award will be announced. The Diligence to Victory award is in its seventh year of recognizing alumni who have distinguished themselves with service to the university, community or nation, or whose outstanding leadership in their business or professional lives exemplifies the motto of the first graduating class of Fort Smith Junior College: Through diligence to victory.
The Young Alumni Award, created by the Alumni Advisory Council in 2016, recognizes a graduate younger than 40 who has demonstrated service to the university, community, state or nation and who is a strong professional leader.
A pinning ceremony for those who have not yet received an alumni Bell Tower pin will take place at the social.
Next the party moves outside at 7 p.m. to the street fair on Kinkead Avenue where representatives of Fort Smith’s vibrant food truck culture will offer their wares. An ice skating rink, music and a street painting competition will offer fun for students, alumni, family and friends. A VIP alumni tent on The Green will provide coffee and a dessert bar.
A homecoming tailgate party is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the RAWC, the new student Recreation and Wellness Complex. A Caribbean buffet and student organization booths with food will ensure tailgaters arrive at the Stubblefield Center well fed to cheer on the Lady Lions (at 1 p.m.) and the Lions (at 3 p.m.) as they take on the Rogers State Hillcats.
Alumni registration for all the weekend’s homecoming events is $30 per person. That includes the Friday night social with Caribbean appetizers, two $5 vouchers for the food trucks, access to the VIP alumni tent on The Green with coffee and dessert, a Lion’s Life for Me T-shirt, the Saturday tailgate party and tickets to both basketball games.
The social is an adults-only event, but children are welcome at the tailgate party and basketball games for a $5 registration fee.
